Saturday, July 11, 1942

JD’s been pretty busy lately and hasn’t had much time for writing home. Hopefully he will receive more mail soon, and he’ll be able to write a better letter. JD says he got a letter from McCoy, and that he mentioned getting letters from home. JD still looks at his own pictures all the time. He’s also taken some photos on the island, but he’s not sure where he can get them developed.

Monday, May 11, 1942

JD says they've been under complete black outs and he's having to write next to a small lantern. He was happy to receive their letters; air mail stamps don't seem to affect how quickly he receives the letters. He's glad that the family finally got his letters that he wrote while on the boat to Australia; JD comments that lots of boys got sea sick, but that he only got a little nauseous once. He wishes he could tell more about what he does, but he's not allowed. JD mentions a ship log that was made on the voyage to Australia, and he means to send mail it home so that everybody can read about what all happened.

The First Letter

Monday, August 25, 1941 This was JD's first letter from Fort Brag. "A man doesn't appreciate anything until he gets to a place like this."
